More than 300 industry experts gathered in Lyon for the CRU Silicon Market Forum 2025. Our Managing Director, Dr. Reiner Haus, joined the discussions on the future of silicon production in Europe.
A key announcement came from Ferroglobe: all European silicon smelters will be shut down due to uncompetitive costs, while expansion continues in the U.S. The forum highlighted the growing dominance of Chinese silicon and the strategic importance of securing high-quality quartz.
Dr. Haus emphasized that new smelter projects in regions like Kazakhstan, Malaysia, and India are facing challenges in sourcing suitable quartz – a critical bottleneck for future growth.
